“The nice thing about New York is that you’re finally able to wear those winter clothes that have been sitting in your closet in mothballs.”
— Kyle MacLachlan
It’s January here in New York — we’re officially well into the winter season! ☃️
This may be the first full winter I’ve spent in NYC in about five years.
I usually sneak off for a warm-weather escape 🌴,
but this year I’m staying put and giving winter a warm (and layered) welcome.
Despite below 30°F ❄️ temperatures in December, I’ve been doing surprisingly well — and even enjoyed our first snowfall of what’s shaping up to be a snowy season.
As they say, winter in NYC is snow joke 😂.
I celebrated that first snowfall with a walk through Prospect Park, and it was truly wonderland-ful.
If you’re in New York — whether visiting or local — heading to one of the city’s major parks after a snowfall is a definite must.
There’s something special about how snow softens the city.
It slows things down, quiets the streets, and gives NYC a temporary clean slate… at least until things turn slushy. Ah, the NYC life!
If you’d like to add snowy park visits to your winter plans, here are a few NYC Parks Department resources I regularly check for ideas and updates:
🛷 Sledding in Parks – NYC Gov Parks
☕ Snow Days – On select days, parks across the city may offer free organized recreation, including supervised sledding, complimentary sleds, and sometimes even hot chocolate
Finding Animal Tracks in the Snow – a fun scavenger hunt nature idea in the snow.
While winter can feel quieter in New York, there’s always something happening if you know where to look. 🗓️
One of my favorite resources is NYC for Free, especially their calendar view of free events:

I also recommend following their Instagram for ongoing updates:

It’s a great option for both locals and visitors exploring the city on a tight budget — something I can definitely relate to these days. 💵
